Wesbter Hall

I'm sure it's just the bored sign assemblers joking around but isn't there just a little bit inside of you that want's to believe it was a genuine dyslexia induced, slow motion error. Man, it would make my day. Being gullable should be re-labeled optimistic.

The first thing you think is 'I wish I'd thought of that' right? Well Maisie Maud Broadhead did. Great idea.

Free Falling

Surely the greatest self portraits of all time? Inspired by the helplessness he felt after the 9/11 attacks, Kerry Skarbakka photographs himself falling from trees, jumping off bridges and in the midst of fires. Seriously worth a look. Amazing shots.

Stranger Than Paradise

The ICA are hosting a Jim Jarmusch extravaganza all through December, to celebrate the release of the great director's latest movie 'The Limits of Control'. They're playing three of his own masterpieces (Dead Man, Stranger Than Paradise, Down by Law) along with The Limits of Control, plus a bunch of other bad ass and rare films that inspired the amazing fruit bar.

You can read all about it and view the programme in full right here.

Mixtape

Also whilst browsing through Juxtapoz I discovered this dude - Aakash Nihalani. He's a street artist that goes round altering environments and dimensions with muti-coloured tape. He's just branched out to India apparently. Read more here and definately check out Aakash's website www.aakashnihalani.com

Blind Leading the Blind

I found this animation on juxtapoz.com. Ericailcane, DEM from Italy and Will Barras from the UK, created the animation to accompany music that was being written at the same time by – Om Unit (UK), Tatsuki (JP) and Tayone (IT).

They all worked in Bologna for 4 consecutive days, but never saw the final result of each other’s work until the last day.

When everything was brought together for the final showcase, no one knew what it would look and sound like together until the show started.

BAD.

Nobutaka Aozaki

'Tgot' by Nobutaka Aozaki.

I recently visited the Hunter College's end of year Art show and was particularly taken by Nobutaka's work. This installation piece was super immersive, I stood gawk eyed for ages, sucked in by it's mortal breathing and hypnotic pulse. You can check out more of his Nobutaka's work on his website www.nobutakaaozaki.com. The Smiley Bag Project is pretty bitching also! Good work.

Wall To Wall

Catch this if you can. An installation by Raw Edges Design Studio for British furniture playboys Established & Sons. On view until 24th November at Established's LIMITED gallery in Mayfair.

Isla

Great artwork for Isla, the new album from the truly incredible Portico Quartet. Seriously, you need this band in your life. Listen here and here.

{ths}

More from Mr. Schostock. This is a link to much interesting work from his studio {ths}. Thomas also co-founded the Cape Arcona Type Foundry which is worth a peep. Smoe great free fonts available to download.

glOry

Love this dude (Thomas Schostock)'s jounal/sketchbook excerpts from Devora Ran. Reminded me to do more hands on collaging/photocopying/drawing/ripping/sticking like the good old college days. Too often I, for one, head straight to my faithful Mac nowadays. Long live the archaic and analogue. Get your pencils out. Ahem.

Turn The Page

Banging track. Sick video. 'Namida' by Swiss/Japanese duo TIM & PUMA MIMI.

Justified

Excellent posters/flyers for East London collective Bad Passion Project. I love them. Really refreshing and unusual 1940's coastal holiday resort / Japanese thing going on. Can't put my finger on it. You can see the whole set here. No idea who designs them? Mail me.

Cold Cave

My new favourite band. I could immediately pick out a ton of influences when I listened to Cold Cave and almost dismissed them straight away. Then I realised I loved all of said influences. I have listened to the tracks on their MySpace over and over. Am excited to hear more and hopefully catch them live. They're playing Proud Gallery Saturday night (November 7th) so get down there if you can. It's a phat night anyway.

Stated influences:
1) Pamela Ludwig as "Cory" in Over The Edge (1979)
2) Laurie Bird as "The Girl" in Two-Lane Blacktop (1971)
3) Barbara Hershey as "Sandy" in Last Summer (1969)
4) Linda Manz as "Cebe" in Out of the Blue (1980)

And some stuff I can hear:
New Order and Joy Division, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Errors, Air, Kraftwerk, Cut Copy, Baby Dayliner, Fuck Buttons, Fischerspooner, Flying Lotus, Charles de Goal...

Prety tasty collage too.

Ay Ay Ay

Minimal giants Kompakt are just about to release Ay Ay Ay by Matias Aguyayo in the UK. The album has gained a certain mainstream interest due to the fact that Aguyayo predominantly uses his voice as an instrument throughout. But this stretches way beyond novelty in to a complex and surprisingly relaxed, enjoyable and easy listen. You can listen to the album in full courtesy of Clash.

Lubalin Now

The opening reception for a badass Typography exhibition at the Cooper Union, celebrating the opening of the Herb Lubalin Study Center of design and Typography, is free and open to the public. Should you happen to be in New York this Thursday then I seriously recommend dropping in. Lots of amazing work on show including this piece by favourites of mine - Non-Format. Read more and find out details here.

A Growing Pile of Work

A Growing Pile of Work - Directed by Siggi Eggertsson. Music by Johnny Sexual.

Siggi Says - "This is a video that is made from over 400 images that I created from 2003-2009. Bits and pieces from commercial, rejected and personal projects. I had been collecting all those images to use in a completely different project, but then discovered that they could look great in animation too. After painful days in After Effects, fighting with all those 400 layers (and nearly killing my computer), the video was complete."

Field Work

A exciting pop up shop and gallery called 'Field Work' opens in an unused shop on Hanbury Street this Thursday, 29th October. Curated by dreamy illustrator Caitlin Hinshelwood the upstairs shop will feature textiles, homeware, taxidermy, antiques, artists books, and gift cards from an army of young and twisted creatives. Downstairs is a gallery space with prints and works on paper for sale too. Well worth a look. You can read more on Caitlin's blog hinshelwooddeborman.blogspot.com

The Box

Can't decide whether I like or dislike this plot yet, or whether it looks cheesy or sufficiently weird enough to entice me. Each time I've watched this trailer I've been more excited to see it and quite frankly if it was a trailer for shit on a stick being directed by Richard Kelly (Donnie motherf**ng Darko) then I would go see it. Can't wait.

For Those About to Kern...

Dutch designer Rob Van Hoesel has some great work on his website. Go and get lost. I particularly love his Tabletto font.

Prmeutaonits

So we'll each make a work and place them together. Or side-by-side. Or within one another. I'd like to make a new work with glass clipframes. I'll use words then, clipframes and permutations. Maybe your poems in my frames? I like this idea of an accident waiting to happen. What if it's more specific to the space itself? Because it's quite small, it's only a storefront. The show's not up for long, so consider the duration. Roughness, too. And compression. Yours are modular in the same way as mine. They're permutations, visual rhymes of each other. That's what gives it meaning. It should be quite an empty gallery when you first look. Yes, the gaps are what will fill it. - DE & RG

For those of you not lucky enough to be able to make it, this is the 'Permutations' exhibition that opened last Thursday in New York at W/--- Gallery. It's a collaboration between Daniel Eatock and Rob Giampietro that consists of 1950's Concrete Poet Emmet Williams inspired word sculptures and some carefully composed, complimentary humble clip frame arrangements. Some lovely ideas executed brilliantly in this quirky little space.

Tomorrow, in a Year

The world seen through the eyes of Charles Darwin forms the basis for the performance Tomorrow, in a year. Theatre production company Hotel Pro Forma’s striking visuals blend with pop-duo The Knife’s ground-breaking music to create a new species of electro-opera.

It's been desribed by Pitchfork as looking like 'a neon hell filtered through David Lynch's melting brain'. Nuff said.

And from the inside...

This is my pick of 'The Year In Pictures' 1972. President Nixon looking completely bemused by the Chinese cuisine on offer at the dinner in Hangchow with Premier Chou En-lai. Priceless.

LIFE 1972

Check this out:Awesome LIFE Magazine cover from 1972, blogged about in great and interesting detail on The Font Feed. I picked up a copy on Amazon for like 8 squids. RAD.

Zero to 99

I discovered this dude Robert Pollard on Aquarium Drunkard and fell in love with his collages. You can check them out here and read about him (he's quite an amazing character) and his new Boston Spaceships album 'Zero to 99' here. Enjoy.

Permutations

Some kind of hootenanny put on by W/--- featuring the great Mr. Eatock amongst others. Not too sure what it is to be honest but the poster is bad ass (as are all the others from the W/--- collection - be sure to check their site) and it sounds tres interesting. I read about it here.

Own Means

Licking the grimy salt shadows
from his fingerprints
You dart out, faux-hippy
tripping on your on-trend benefactor's budget
Tungsten tongues, knives
in the night
Your mind is blank but for
the brilliance of your own sloppy birth

A woman heads South to town,
got souls in her suit pockets
You've got vice with her,
she stands for something
Anything means nothing, nothing
your all

You smoke roadside trash

Poor. Old. Tired. Horse.

Unfortunately it was the last day of this exhibition at the ICA today so this post may seem near pointless. However it was great, and if you are not familiar with 'Concrete Poetry' then it's well worth looking into. Although a small exhibition, there was a wide array of really varied work including pieces by Dom Sylvester Houdedard and Janice Kerbel (above). You can find out more about the show and it's exhibitors at www.ica.org.uk
